Over the next few days we’ll be posting the final stories created this year in partnership with Austin Independent School District. Special thanks to Sarah Waggoner and Bobbi Graves for hosting us this year in their classrooms.
First up! TWO ROWERS. A young athlete reflects on sharing her love of the sport with her grandmother, who nearly passed from ovarian cancer.
Listen to it on PRX: http://www.prx.org/pieces/78774-two-rowers
Hear this semester’s pieces from Kealing Middle School and Eastside Memorial High School students on PRX Public Radio Exchange!

We wanted to offer a special plug to SOUNDIRON, a sound design hub that’s donated their incredibly compelling experimental sounds from the Cathedral of Junk in Austin, Texas. We will be using their creations for a youth-produced radio documentary on the same subject. Listen to, and learn more about this amazing collection here: Cathedral of Junk.
And stay tuned for the final version of the radio documentary….we post final stories here on the blog, and on the national radio platform, Public Radio Exchange.
Guess who just received yet another NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS Grant????
Yep——that’d be STORIES FROM DEEP IN THE HEART!
We’re thrilled & honored to be part of the NEA family. Thank you, NEA!
Congratulations to our amazing 2012 STORIES INTERNS!
STORIES is currently collaborating with P.O.D.E.R’s Youth Scholars program, where we work with their best & brightest to produce radio documentaries. This weekend was the annual big draw event for Texas Folklife, THE BIG SQUEEZE ACCORDION CONTEST, and our youth reporters were there to cover the whole event.
You did a great job, interns!
KEALING MIDDLE SCHOOL IN AUSTIN, TEXAS HAS BEEN (YARN) BOMBED!
Congratulations to our youth-producers who have created a public service in their schools. Stay tuned for their completed audio stories!
We’d like to give an extra special shout to EAST SIDE PIES for donating TWO large pizzas to our youth interns.
Yummmmm!

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS?
STORIES youth-producers investigate whether ghosts still lurk at The Driskill, Austin’s iconic hotel.
Special thanks to Laura Heathcott, Director of Social Media, who spent time with our young reporters to share some of The Driskill’s most fascinating tales. I won’t reveal anything in this post because our kids are working hard on a story which will include tales of Driskill’s “Suicide Brides” and the “Little Girl Who Fell Down the Stairs.”
However, I will reveal that the little girl in the painting above is reportedly haunted. Patrons of the hotel have reported eerie things happening to that the little girl in the portrait. Shhhhhhh. I can’t say anymore!
Stay tuned to hear the story by Kealing Middle School students.
FLAVORS OF LIFE | Spices & Herbs | Dispatches From Abroad
By: Cristina Balli
Fellow Mission 2062 participant describes an item she brought to share with the group—sumac, that her grandmother used to prepare. Maya Zbib is a Lebanese theatre performer and director. She’ll be bringing her one-woman show to Maryland in May.
Sumac is a spicy herb used as a topper on meals – excellent on spinach pizza. I have some to share!
DISPATCHES FROM ABROAD | Paris, France | Connecting with Culture, the Italian-Canadian Way
By Cristina Balli
As you know, part of the STORIES FROM DEEP IN THE HEART mission is to connect our youth-producers to their own heritages; we teach them to preserve and promote their own ethnic, religious, or cultural identities.
From Paris, here’s an inspiration for our STORIES participants. Peabody-winning journalist Paolo Pietropolo reflects on how he reconnected with his Italian heritage while growing up in Toronto.
